Editing medical journals: short course (2-4 November 2011, Oxford, UK)
The world of medical publishing is facing huge changes and journal editors are expected to ensure success in the face of increasing expectations from authors, reviewers, publishers and readers. This two-day course, now in its 15th year, looks at the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to run a successful publication - recognising that most editors are full-time scientists and clinicians and not full-time editors. The course looks at relationships that editors need to cultivate with authors, readers, reviewers and other members of the editorial team; and investigates strategies to improve efficiencies and quality.
London Book Fair 2011: The partnership between author and editor SfEP hosts its first seminar at the London Book Fair
The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) invites you to its first-ever seminar at the London Book Fair, on 13 April 2011 at 2.30pm. It will be held in Wellington Rooms 1 and 2, Level 1, Earl's Court Exhibition Centre, Warwick Road, Hammersmith, London SW5 9TA. The seminar, entitled
The partnership between author and editor, will explore how the relationship between author, in-house editor and freelance editor works to mutual advantage. The panel comprises two trios – one in general/popular medicine and the other in fiction – and will be chaired by Christina Thomas, a long-standing member of the SfEP who was recently awarded honorary membership. The authors Mark Newton (fiction) and Bridget McCall (popular medicine) will discuss how they work with their editors Julie Crisp and Lawrence Osborn and Dick Warner and Richenda Milton-Daws respectively. SfEP Chair Sarah Price said: "We're delighted to be hosting our first-ever session at the London Book Fair. Publishing processes are changing rapidly, but we're keenly aware that good working relationships and effective communication remain at the heart of achieving quality."
The seminar is open to all London Book Fair visitors (registration for the London Book Fair does not guarantee entry to a specific seminar).
For more information or to schedule an interview please contact Lillian Avon on 01202 417535 or email her at prexecutive@sfep.org.uk. Notes for editors:

It has approximately 1,400 members and associates (mostly in the UK) providing editorial services to publishers and a wide range of companies, government agencies and other bodies.
